National News at The Intersection
This week, we added a new National News section to our website. Our first story comes from the Texas Metro News, a publication that covers the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan area.
Voting Results
As noted in the last newsletter, Angela Alsobrooks remains the County Executive of Prince George's County. Wes Moore, who received endorsements from Angela Alsobrooks, The Afro News, and Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy, has won the Democratic nomination for governor of Maryland. Candidate for Governor Franchot and Monique Anderson-Walker, candidate for Lt. Governor, conceded on July 22. Candidate for Governor Tom Perez and Shannon Sneed, candidate for Lt. Governor, also conceded on July 23. Perez wrote on his website:
“I congratulate Wes Moore and Aruna Miller on their hard-fought victory. Now is the time for us to unite, and I look forward to aggressively working with them to flip Maryland blue this November," wrote Perez on his website.
Also on July 23, Candidate for Governor Doug Gansler and Candace Hollingsworth, candidate for Lt. Governor, both conceded. Here are their joint statements.
Attorney General Doug Gansler wrote:
“Although the results were not what we had hoped for, I am grateful to have spent the last year talking to Maryland voters about the issues that matter to them. So much is at stake in this election — from abortion rights to climate change to the crime epidemic. I congratulate Wes and Aruna and urge my supporters to unite behind their ticket. We must do everything we can to stop Dan Cox this November.
“I am profoundly thankful to Mayor Candace Hollingsworth, my staff and volunteers, every elected official and organization who endorsed our campaign, and every Maryland voter who put their trust in us. Most importantly, I am thankful to my two sons, Will and Sam, who are my proudest achievement. I will always support you in any path you choose, but I hope I have shown you that public service is a noble profession.”
From former Mayor of Hyattsville Candace Hollingsworth:
“I am honored to have shared this extraordinary journey with Doug Gansler. I ran for lieutenant governor because Black voters have consistently shown up but have been consistently let down. I look forward to centering our voices as we work to elect the Moore-Miller ticket in November.
“Thank you to my family, who supported me in this endeavor. I will continue to fight for a world in which Black children can be truly free — a world where my son is safe to walk our streets and my daughter can make her own decisions as to whether and when to start a family.”
Moore will face Trump-backed Republican Dan Cox, a state delegate, in November's general election. Cox talked with NBC 4 Washington in a recent interview. Cox said, if he wins, "Marylanders can expect policies similar to Trump’s."
Perez shared his worries about Cox. In the same statement where he conceded to Moore, Perez wrote:
"I also believe the stakes in this election have never been higher. In the era of a radicalized Supreme Court, states are now the last bastion of our civil rights," Meanwhile, Maryland Republicans have nominated Dan Cox, an extreme right-wing, QAnon conspiracy theory peddling insurrectionist as their candidate for governor. We cannot let that happen. And we cannot take anything for granted."
Gov. Larry Hogan - an anti-Trumper who, in some instances, has leveled the same kind of conservative talking points against President Biden as his far-right colleagues - said he believes GOP's nomination will guarantee a Democratic win.
