This ruling moves away from a mask mandate that was a part of the school system last year. It comes at a time when an Omicron variant, BA.5, one that evades vaccinations, is spreading in the county. There is no guarantee that the spread will slow into fall. It has been predicted that 100 million people could contract the virus . The Biden-Harris administration will roll out a new booster for children 12 years old and older in September. This new booster is meant to combat this current Omicron variant. The county is encouraging students to get vaccinated before returning to school. But these vaccines are not the booster shots that will be released in the fall. However, vaccines as well as masking remain the best mitigation strategies against the virus.

Though it is true that Prince George's County has a relatively high vaccination rate. It is also true that some areas of the county still have low vaccination rates. But vaccination is not the only mitigation strategy to slow the spread of this highly transmissible virus. Improving indoor air quality is another sure strategy coupled with mask-wearing, and vaccines to slow the spread.
As of July 29, in Prince George's County, there are 374 new cases, and the 7-day average is 302 . Prince George's County Health Department has recommended putting on a mask.
