To ensure basic government services can be maintained in the next fiscal year, the County Executive is making adjustments to the proposed budget. The County Executive is proposing using reserve funds for FY 2024 to help close the gap while also reviewing the budget for ways to optimize spending.
Leaders divided over Prince George's Co. bill that would pause townhouse construction
Excerpt: With townhome projects going up across Prince George’s, County Council Vice Chair Wala Blegay wants to hit the brakes on new projects.
With the support of a majority on the Council, Blegay is pushing through bills that enact a two-year moratorium on townhouse construction anywhere but in transit-oriented development.
“We’re developing sprawl and the sprawl is hurting us,” Blegay said.
7News first reported on her plan last week. Now, the opposition is growing. Lori Graf represents the Maryland Building Industry Association. She argued, “We need housing. We have a housing crisis. Housing is not affordable in the state of Maryland. Our concern is this is going to exacerbate the problem. It does not help create housing people can afford.”
Excerpt: The chair of the Prince George’s County Democratic Party was chosen Thursday to fill a vacancy in the House of Delegates.
The nomination of Kent Roberson, 38, will be sent to Gov. Wes Moore (D), who will have 15 days to make the appointment to the seat.
Roberson, who was elected by unanimous vote, was picked by the Democratic Central Committee from a field of four candidates who interviewed for the job to replace former Del. Darryl Barnes (D), who left the legislature to work as a partner in the Annapolis lobbying and government relations firm of Evans & Associates.
The other candidates who interviewed Thursday evening were former District 25 Del. Angela Angel, Stanley Onye, and Jonathan White.
African American History Museum’s Free Hip-Hop Block Party Returns This Summer
Excerpt: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will host its second annual hip-hop block party this August, featuring performances, interactive art, and focused exhibits celebrating 50 years of the genre.
The block party will take place on Saturday, Aug. 12, the museum announced Friday. The event will be held at the intersection of Madison Drive NW and 14th Street NW, outside the museum. A full line-up of artists and programming will be released in the coming months, according to the museum. The event will be free to attend; though tickets are required for entry, and will be available online in July.
While the inaugural 2022 celebration marked the one-year anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap, this summer’s event will celebrate 50 years of the genres’ evolution and innovation. In conjunction with the event, the museum will install an outdoor panel exhibition, including artifacts from the museum’s collection.
What the region’s Sudanese diaspora wants you to know about the country’s ongoing conflict
Excerpt: Sudanese immigrant Wafa May Elamin says she has struggled lately to navigate her daily routine – which usually starts by checking in on her family members back home and reading up on the latest news coming out of the Sudan. In between scanning her work emails, Elamin says she looks out for video messages from her loved ones to make sure they are mostly safe.
“You can hear active gunfire in the background,” says Elamin, who was born in Sudan and lives in Alexandria, Va. “It’s kind of like experiencing second-hand trauma, knowing that this is what our family is going through.”
