Black Caucus lays out legislative priorities for 2025 session
Excerpt: The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland unveiled a sweeping legislative agenda Thursday that includes a number of issues that are back after they were debated in previous sessions but didn’t pass.
Caucus members said the measures are still worth fighting for.
“We are saying yes to our children. We’re saying, ‘Yes, you are human,'” said Del. J. Sandy Bartlett (D-Anne Arundel), speaking about one of those returning bills, to end the practice of youths being automatically charged as adults for certain crimes. “Yes, you deserve to not be automatically charged as an adult in certain circumstances.”
Bartlett, vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee, was speaking about the Youth Equity and Safety Act, or the YES Act. Not only would it end the practice of charging some youths as adults, but it would also make sure they’re housed in juvenile facilities.

Tax cuts, increases part of Moore’s ‘growth agenda’
Excerpt: Gov. Wes Moore Wednesday proposed a budget he said will promote long-term economic growth and provide tax cuts to many, but it will be balanced on tax increases on high-income earners in the state.
Moore’s proposed $67.3 billion spending plan — a 1% increase compared to the current year — includes $2 billion in cuts and efficiencies to help close projected $3 billion deficit in fiscal 2026. At the same time, it will offer a tax break he hopes will “energize” the state economy.
All of the moves, the governor said, are made with an eye toward needed economic growth in a state where the post-pandemic economy continues to falter. The projected $3 billion budget gap for fiscal 2026 could grow to more than $6 billion by fiscal 2030 if no action is taken, analysts have said.

It's inauguration weekend. Here are 26 ways to enjoy D.C. anyway
Excerpt: It’s true that President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration will take place in D.C. on Monday, and his supporters will descend upon our city this weekend. It’s also true that there are plenty of ways District residents can spend the next few days drowning out the noise — if they so choose. Whether it’s volunteering for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, attending a protest, vibing to live music, or laughing with loved ones, we’ve rounded up a list of activities to keep you busy and in community with like-minded people.

Opioids are killing older Black men in D.C. at some of the highest rates in the country
Excerpt: Almost three decades had passed since 78-year-old Lance Ward last used heroin, but depression had deepened in his old age. While he’d been out for about seven years, decades of incarceration — and the drug deals and armed robberies that landed him there — cast a heavy shadow. Plus, even after all this time, the cravings still haunted him.
When Ward settled into the passenger seat of an old friend’s car on the D.C.-Maryland border earlier this year, it didn’t seem like a high-stakes decision to use again — he was just looking for a little relief. He’d heard rumors about fentanyl, a synthetic opioid magnitudes stronger than heroin that had overtaken the drug supply in recent years, but he was a veteran drug user. In his heyday, Ward says he routinely used an uncut heroin that he would’ve diluted 15 or 20 times before dealing it.

Purple Line Takes Shape as Shelters Installed Around College Park
Excerpt: After years of construction, the Purple Line is starting to take shape as transit shelters have been installed around College Park.
Light-rail stops in the Discovery District business park, at the College Park Metro station and on the University of Maryland campus now have glass-roofed shelters where future riders will wait.
In addition, the College Park Metro station now has seven new glass shelters where bus riders can wait outside of the rain.

Excerpt: PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Most state and federal offices in Maryland will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader.
There will be no mail delivery. FedEx will have modified services on MLK Day, while its freight, office, critical and logistics divisions will be open as usual. UPS will be closed for the day, but limited locations and its express critical service will be available.
